The Working Garden

Inside our open studio, where models and planting studies share the same table.
Our studio opens onto a garden that is also a test bed. Substrate mixes, cassette prototypes, and species trials sit in rows behind the model workshop, watered by the same rainwater loop we specify on site.
It has changed how we work. A facade cassette that fails in the garden fails cheaply; a species that struggles in a Rotterdam winter can be discovered here rather than on level eighteen.
The planting studies sit on the same table as the structural model, because they are the same drawing.
It has also changed who we hire. Half the team trained in landscape or horticulture rather than architecture, and the design reviews are better for it.
